In accordance with the law, the Detention Center houses criminal defendants, the accused, correctional inmates, and inmates who receive a sentence of less than one year. Relevant enforcement is administered by the Shihlin DA's Office. Due to the rapid development of society, facilities of the Detention Center were found to be no longer sufficient. Moreover, some buildings were sea-sand houses. Due to safety concerns, the Detention Center was therefore temporarily moved to the Custody Center of the Taipei Detention Center on February 13, 1998, in response to the request of the Ministry of Justice. The Shihlin Detention Center has been working on moving to Sijhih and construction is estimated to be completed in 2009.
